Bombs Kill 13 Afghans; Elderly Man Dies in Raid

KABUL, Afghanistan — Bombings killed at least 13 civilians who had gathered to celebrate spring picnics in southern and eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, provincial authorities reported, and a joint NATO-Afghan force shot an elderly man in a house raid on a rural village in Wardak Province.

 
EGYPT: Mubarak names new Al Azhar top cleric

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Friday named Ahmed Tayeb as the new head of Al Azhar, Sunni Islam's most influential institution, which includes a university and a research center. Tayeb has presided over Al Azhar's university since 2003 and will succeed Sheik Mohamed Sayed Tantawi, who died of a heart attack on March 10.
