My Life with the Taliban by Abdul Salam Zaeef
Operation blunt sword

The mid-summer major offensive of allied forces in Southern Afghanistan was launched by the name of Khanjar. Khanjar (خنجر) translated to English by the Media suppose to be 'Strike of the Sword'. However, the word Khanjar is a Persian word which is translated to "dirk, dagger or bowieknife".

According to the news reports, the largest US Marines deployments since the Vietnam war in an offensive is deployed to secure a canal crossing in Southern Helmand Province of Afghanistan were the Taliban have led a succesful resistance against occupation by the Allied Forces.

Although the early reports are of swift succes by the Marines and a contigent of under one thousand Afghan troops, one could wonder why there is so much fuss about an operation just to secure a canal crossing, and why several thousand US Marines are deployed, while according to a ICOS report  in 2008 there is Taliban presence and activity in more than 70% of Afghanistan. Furthermore, fact that the current operation is called Khanjar and translated to 'strike of the sword' is rather hilarious. Comparing a dagger to the strike of the sword one can note that although but can be lethal, there is however significant difference between a dagger and a sword.

Maybe, the US and its Allied are hoping to strike with a dagger and inflict a blow like a sword. Which is very ambitious considering the fact the for the last 8 years they have failed to subdue the resistance dispite the presence of over 3 dozen of contigents from the most prosperous and wealthy countries of the world.
